Projectors: The Old and The New By: Jackie Marciano Mike Smitherman Clifford Gipson Brett Sheppard

Description of Each Overhead  Typically consists of a large box with a bright lamp and a fan to cool it with a large fresnel lens above it  A lens and mirror system projects images from a pre-printed transparencies, upon which the lecturer can write on using a non-permanent, washable color marking pen  Has a multirange fixed focus which allows you to move the overhead up to three feet without having to refocus Video  A video projector takes a video image from a computer and then projects the image onto a projection screen using a lens system  Most modern ones can correct any curves, blurriness, and other inconsistencies through manual settings.

Similarities  Both used to present information and images  Both used for larger viewing audiences (ie. classroom, professional setting)  Need light and electricity in order to function  Need prior knowledge about the device before able to use

Differences Overhead  Can be as far as 3 feet away from the projector screen  Requires manual adjustment for focusing  Requires use of mirrors for projection  Needs pre-written or pre- typed material which is then projected onto a screen Video  Can be a much greater distance from projector screen  Can project larger, more detailed images  Focuses automatically  Requires more technical knowledge to operate  Needs computer to function

Cost Overhead  Prices generally range from $100 to about $400 Video  Prices generally range from $1000 to $4000

Benefits of Video Projector  Allows use of computer programs for teaching purposes  Ex. PowerPoint  Much easier to edit information  Clearer viewing, higher resolution  More professional appearance  Much faster and more efficient  Can be connected to an interactive white board to interactively teach the students

Conclusion  The benefits of the video projector outweighs the financial cost  The evolved technology allows for an improved presentation of information  Projectors are compatible with various computers, making them user-friendly
