4 Ex.: The parking lot fills so rapidly. The adverb so modifies the adverb rapidly, which ends with the suffix –ly. The adverb rapidly modifies the verb fills. Ex.: He can finish a book very quickly. The adverb very modifies the adverb quickly, which ends in –ly. The adverb quickly modifies the verb phrase can finish.

5 Adverbs may come before, after, or between the words they modify Ex: Quietly, she will tiptoe from the stage. She will quietly tiptoe from the stage. She will tiptoe quietly from the stage.

7 Narrative Poetry - It is a poem that tells a story. Have several characters Describes a conflict Have a resolution to the conflict Longer than other poems

8 *Alliteration - A sound device in which the beginning sound or sounds in a group of words are repeated Ex: She sells seashells by the seashore *Imagery – Words a writer uses to create a picture in the reader’s mind. Based on the five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing)

10 *Onomatopoeia - words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to, allowing a reader to hear and picture the image easier Ex: creak, squeak, hiss, whistle *Personification – when an lifeless object is given human qualities or abilities Ex: the sun danced, the rain pounded, the old car groaned

11 Theme - An observation about people Ex: how we treat each other or ourselves The point of view a writer wishes to express about a topic (Ex: love, death, relationships) How to find theme: 1) Ask: What is the topic? 2) How does the writer feel about (the topic)? 3) The answer to the question is the theme.

14 Third Person Omniscient - the narrator (not involved in the story) can tell what is going on in the minds of all characters *Simile - is a comparison of two unlike objects using like or as. Ex: His feet are as big as boats. Feet and boats are being compared.

15 *Metaphor - a comparison that states that one thing is something else, does NOT use like or as to make the comparison. Example: Her hair is silk. Hair and silk are being compared. *Rhyme - The similarity or likeness of sound existing between two words. Example: “sat” and “cat”

16 *Repetition – when a word/phrase, idea, object appears multiple times

27 Allusion - a reference to something/someone, often in literature or history. Example: “Use the force” to help a friend finish something challenging. This would be alluding to Star Wars.

28 *Rhyme Scheme - 1)Looking at the last word of the first line of the poem. Assign it the letter "a". 2)Look at the last word of the second line. If it rhymes with the last word in the first line it is also assigned an "a". 3)If it does NOT rhyme, assign it a "b". 4)Continue looking at the last word of each line and assigning letters to each. 5)When you are finished, all the lines with "a" should rhyme, all the lines with "b" should rhyme and so on.
