Rosa Parks and Emily Davison
Balestra School Workshops proudly presents .. Famous people lesson 5: Rosa Parks and Emily Davison

Rosa Parks Rosa Parks was born on the 4th February 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama in the United States of America.

Rosa Parks At this time in America, white people and African-American people were treated differently, with ‘whites only’ seats on buses.

Rosa Parks Rosa thought that this was wrong and that being treated differently because of the colour of your skin was a very bad thing indeed.

Rosa Parks On the 1st December 1955 she decided to do something about this and refused to move when a bus driver asked her to give her seat on a bus to a white male passenger.

Rosa Parks She was arrested by the police and fined 14 dollars for breaking the rules, but other people heard about this and stopped using the buses to support Rosa.

Rosa Parks This led to a change in the law on the 20th December 1956 which stopped this happening on buses. Rosa Parks had won and from that moment, anybody could sit in any seat they wanted.

Summary: so Why was rosa parks famous?
She stood up and fought against an unfair rule which treated people differently because of the colour of their skin. Many other people were inspired to do similar protests that led to ‘equal rights’ all over the USA.

Interesting facts A portion of an American road (called a ‘freeway’) in Los Angeles is named after her. She lost her job because of the bus protest.

Emily Davison Emily Davison was born on the 11th October 1872, at a time when women weren’t treated as equal as men.

Emily Davison One of the big problems was that women were not allowed to vote in England’s ‘elections’, when people vote for the people who should lead the country.

Emily Davison Emily thought that this was unfair so she joined a group of women called the ‘suffragettes’, who would march and protest to try get people to see that it was wrong and change the law.

Emily Davison On the 4th June Emily stepped out in front of the King’s horse, Anmer, during a famous horse race called the ‘Epsom Derby’ to try to draw attention to their cause by attaching a scarf to the horse’s bridle.

Emily Davison She was very badly injured as the horse hit her and on the 8th June 1913 she died of her injuries. This shocked the nation and in 1916 the law was finally changed to allow women to vote.

Summary: so Why was emily davison famous?
Emily was famous because her and the other ‘Suffragettes’ had won equal votes for women.

Interesting facts Emily was sent to prison nine times for standing up for her beliefs. A famous suffragette slogan of ‘deeds not words’ is on her grave stone.
