NC (Non-Conforming): Text that has a Lexile measure markedly higher than is typical for the publisher's intended audience or designated developmental level of the book. HL (High-Low): Text that has a Lexile measure much lower than the average reading ability of the intended age range of its readers. IG (Illustrated Guide): Text that consists of independent pieces or sections of text such as in an encyclopedia or glossary. GN (Graphic Novel): Text that is a graphic novel or comic book. BR (Beginning Reading): Text that receives a Lexile measures below OL. NP (Non-Prose): Text that is comprised of more than 50% non- standard or non-conforming prose. 6

Given a Lexile measure for a text what information might moderate that measure and its use? – Scaffolding: Audio supported reading increases comprehension by 200L. – Task Demand: What post reading activities will the learner engage in? Some tasks are harder than others. – Qualitative Lexile Codes 11

Emergent Reader Research (Summer 2013) New research now allows further refinement of emergent readers and texts to help differentiate instruction and measure growth at the early grades. On the text side... – Studies examined text features for emergent texts – Text complexity software, i.e. Lexile Analyzer, enhanced to incorporate these features – Emergent text that fall below 0L now receive a Lexile measure (Ex. BR150L) On the reader side... – Refinement of emergent texts on scale allows for match of reader on the same scale 14
