19 th Century Scientist BY- Ezinne Michaels, Matt Tepper, Ana Chambers, Joanna Yu

19 th Century Other Physiologist Claude Bernard- investigated carbohydrate metabolism in humans Walter Bradford Cannon- homeostasis Sir Charles Bell- sensory and motor nerves Fracois Magendie- functions of the spinal nerves and investigated the mechanism of swallowing and regurgitation Pierre Flourens- functions of cerebellum and animal psychology Johannes Peter Muller- showed perceptions were determined only by the sensory organs that received the sensory impulse Heinrich Weber- two types of nerves stimulate the human heart

Mathias Jakob Schleiden Co-founded cell theory (along with Theodor Schwann) Accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution Professor of Botany at University of Jena Plant organisms were composed of cells

Theodor Schwann German physiologist who founded modern histology Investigated digestive processes- pepsin Observed year and found that sugar and starch was the result of life process Muscular contraction and nerve structure Co-founder of Cell Theory with Mathias Schleiden Schwann Cells are the satellite cell of the peripheral nervous system which surrounds axon and motor nerve terminals.

Cell Theory Living organisms are composed of cells Basic unit of life Arise from existing cells

Carl Zeiss  Established his Optical company in Thuringia, Germany  Producing an instrument for scientific research  The “Forefront” to the study of cell research.
