10 The South In 1820, the south was still very rural. The economy was based on the plantation system. “King Cotton” ruled. The south was dependent on northern industry. Large and small farms depended on slavery. Plantation life was incredibly harsh for slaves.

11 THE SOUTH PoliticalEconomicSocial Protecting slavery in the south was the most important goal of the southerners Fighting tariffs was paramount to Southerners since tariffs increased the price of goods imported from Europe Southerners were against internal improvements because it cost money and it did not meet their transportation needs. Cotton was still king of the south, as it replaced linen and wool as top fiber for cloth Tobacco was also still a major crop in the UPPER region of the South The transportation system was designed to get goods to the ocean. Main transportation in the South was rivers, streams, and inter-coastal routes. While not everyone in the South supported slavery, most were in favor of states’ rights Only 1 out of every 4 Texans owned slaves Middle and lower class supported slavery even though few had twenty slaves or more. They were afraid of slave rebellion and competition from free blacks.
