1 Center for Math & Science Education University of Arkansas
My Very Own Planet Book Lesley Merritt Science Specialist Center for Math & Science Education University of Arkansas (479) Books were created using AccuCut Sun & Earth Book diecuts.

2 This PowerPoint contains two separate book suggestions
This PowerPoint contains two separate book suggestions . If AccuCut Earth and Sun book dies are available, print the pages and use these to cut out the cover and info pages. Because the Earth and Sun dies are different sized pages, both page formats have been provided for easier printing and cutting. The Earth book front/back die may be used if the content will be a comparison of the Earth to the other planets. The Sun book front/back die may be used if the content will be a solar system facts’ book. If the Earth and Sun dies are not available, simply print the books and have the students cut out the pages. The cover page (which is slightly larger) may be printed on heavy colored paper. Edit planet content, if needed, for specific class requirements. Printing Tip In order to make the pages as large as possible first go to “Print Preview” and under Options check “Scale to Fit Paper”.

5 _____________________’s Planet Book
Date: _____________ There are 8 planets. Pluto, once the 9th planet, is now considered a dwarf planet because it is so small. This book shows the cool planet facts I have learned.

6 Mercury Mercury is the ________ planet from the sun.
Mercury has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ days to orbit the sun. It is almost 1/3 the size of Earth (it is now the smallest planet).

7 Mercury Information Mercury is the first planet It has 0 moons
It takes 88 days to orbit the sun.

8 Venus Venus is the ________ planet from the sun.
Venus has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ days to orbit the sun. It is almost the same size of the Earth.

9 Venus Information Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun.
It has 0 moons. It takes 225 days to orbit the sun.

10 Earth Earth is the planet on which we live.
Earth is the ________ planet from the sun. Earth has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ days to orbits the sun. Earth is the only planet known to have living things.

11 Earth Information Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun.
Earth has 1 moon. Earth takes 365 days to orbit the sun.

12 Mars Mars is the ________ planet from the sun.
Mars has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ days to orbit the sun. It is 1/2 the size of Earth. It is sometimes called the red planet because of the reddish mineral on its surface.

13 Mars Information Mars is the 4th planet from the sun.
Mars has 2 moons. It takes 687 days to orbit the sun.

14 Jupiter Jupiter is the ________ planet from the sun.
Jupiter has __________ moon(s). It takes almost _________ years to orbit the sun. It is the largest planet. It has a giant storm on it called the Great Red Spot (the storm is 3 times larger than Earth).

15 Jupiter Information Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun.
Jupiter has 63 moons (many discovered in 2003). It takes almost 12 years to orbit the sun.

16 Saturn Saturn is the ________ planet from the sun.
Saturn has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ years to orbit the sun. It is the second largest planet. It is known for its beautiful ice and rock rings. Image taken from

17 Saturn Information Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun.
Saturn has 60 moons (some discovered as late as 2006). It takes 29 ½ years to orbits the sun.

18 Uranus Uranus is the ________ planet from the sun.
Uranus has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ years to orbit the sun. Uranus revolves on its side and also has rings.

19 Uranus Information Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.
Uranus has 27 moons. It takes 84 years to orbit the sun.

20 Neptune Neptune is the ________ planet from the sun.
Neptune has __________ moon(s). It takes _________ years to orbit the sun. Little is known about Neptune but it does have faint rings.

21 Neptune Information Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun.
Neptune has 13 moons. It takes 165 years to orbit the sun.

22 Pluto Because Pluto is so small, it is no longer considered to be a major planet. It is now called a dwarf planet. We still love Pluto so we will include it. Pluto is the ______ ‘planet’ from the sun. Pluto has _____ moon(s). Its moon is almost as large as Pluto and some scientists consider it a double planet. It takes ________ years to orbit the sun.

23 Pluto Information Pluto is the 9th planet from the sun.
Pluto has 1 moon. Its moon is almost as large as Pluto and some scientists consider it a double planet. It takes 248 years to orbit the sun.

24 Other Dwarf Planets Dwarf planets are small celestial bodies that orbit the Sun Pluto is not the only dwarf planet in the solar system. Some other dwarf planets in our solar system are: Ceres can be found between Mars and Jupiter and has no moons. Haumea can be found in the outermost part of the solar system and has two moons, Hi’iaka and Namaka. Makemake can be found in the outermost part of the solar system (just beyond Pluto) and has no moons. Eris is the most distant object in the solar system and has one moon, Dysnomia. Info on dwarf planets can be found at Info on Ceres can be found at Haumea can be found at Makemake can be found at Eris can be found at
