2 2 The 4-H Seed Identification and Judging Contest is designed to help you learn to determine seed quality and to identify certain crop and weed seeds. When you know seeds and seed quality, you can better determine the true value of planting seeds. Seeds have been important to man since before the dawn of civilization. First, they were only a source of food, but later man learned the value of planting seeds and cultivating crops. The most important mechanism of seed is for survival of their species. 4-H Seed Identification is one of the major activities of the 4-H Plant and Soil Science Project area. Members enrolled in the 4-H Plant and Soil Science Project learn the theory and practice of crop production and soil management. The project is basic to all plant projects. The experiments and learn-by-doing activities help members understand plant development and growth requirements. Opportunities are provided for the participants in 4-H judging, visual presentation, and exhibits.
