3 More People With More Money After WWII, the country went through an economic boom. This placed the majority of the people in the middle class. Due to the increase in population, the government made it easier to buy or build a house in the suburbs so they did not to have to go through the pricey process of updating buildings in the cites. $

4 A Family Car Due to Henry Ford’s ability to mass produce automobiles the average family was able to purchase a family car With increased fears of the Cold War, President Eisenhower created a system of interstate highways in order to move people and supplies quickly around the country. Both of these factors made it easier to commute from a suburb to a city for work everyday, essentially creating a “bedroom community” The Ease of Transportation

5 Why the Suburbs “White Flight” After WWII, many African Americans began establishing homes in urban areas. Many of the urban areas’ wealthy whites moved from the cities to the outlying suburbs in order to keep the segregated feeling of the past. “Greener and Cleaner” Suburbs offered a healthier living environment away from the pollution from city factories

6 Life Styles of the Suburbs The idea of a “nuclear family” was viewed as normal. The father would work outside the home while the mother would stay at home, cooking, cleaning, and raising the children. The idea of “father knows best” was established. 8 Leaving an Impact Greater Feeling of “Freedom” Having a house in the suburbs gave American families financial freedom and freedom from depending on someone for a home. Television In many movies and television shows, such as the Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy, were representative of the suburban life style, where everyone would get married, buy a house and car, and have children.
