2 Background to Plugged in Places To achieve its challenging low carbon targets, Government is encouraging electric motoring: 1.Through grants for electric cars and vans 2.Through tax incentives 3.Through grants for charging points The ‘Plugged in Places’ scheme

3 Grants for electric cars and vans 25% of value of the car, up to £5,000 20% of the value of the van, up to £8,000 Netted off at the dealer More new models being launched throughout 2012/13

New models being launched throughout 2012 Most have a range of c.100 miles If battery is completely empty, it takes 6-8 hrs to charge from 16A supply Or 3-4 hours from a Type 2 Mode 3 32A plug – the new standard This costs c. £1 - £2 in electricity (how far can you go on £1 of diesel?!) Zero emissions, so zero car tax 100% capital write-down in first year Zero benefit in kind tax for company car drivers

5 Grants for Charging Points – Plugged in Places (PiP) PiP is an electric vehicle infrastructure framework kick-started by the Government with £30 million of seed funding. To encourage a UK network of charging points The regions selected to participate in the PiP scheme are London, Milton Keynes, the Midlands, the North East, Greater Manchester, East of England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. In the Midlands, the scheme offers grants of 40% towards the cost of purchase and installation of charging points For individuals having domestic charging points, the grant is 60%

6 Plugged-in Midlands What counts as the Midlands?

7 Plugged-in Midlands – Types of Charging Point Posts can have 2 charging points on them, and charge at 32 Amps This means a full charge in 3-4 hours (if the vehicle can take 32A) Wall mounted versions are also available. Cost is c. £3,000 Tethered cable ‘domestic’ single charging points charge at 16 Amps This means a full charge in 6-8 hours Cost is c. £1,000

8 Plugged-in Midlands PiP grant covers purchase and installation How much does installation cost? –It depends! –On how far away your point is from your distribution board –On whether you need to do any excavation –On whether that excavation is of grass or concrete etc etc Grant includes all reasonable costs of installation, including signage PiP scheme runs until March 2013

9 Plugged-in Midlands New points have so far been installed in Coventry, Longbridge Technology Park, Malvern, Pershore, Redditch, Stoke, Worcester Birmingham City Council have plans to upgrade their existing 18 points, and install at around 15 more locations across the city. Dudley MBC have plans for points in Halesowen, Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Dudley Longbridge Technology Park
