5 Who is in the market for Assurant Affordable Health Access? Employers likely to drop coverage Employer sponsorship of coverage continues to decline as a result of rising premiums. The smaller the business, the greater the trend. Health Insurance Coverage of the Nonelderly Population, 2005 1 Working Uninsured While many of the uninsured are poor or near poor, nearly 35% could afford health insurance. This initiative is focused on two specific market opportunities. 257.4M 1.Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. The Uninsured: A Primer, Key Facts about Americans without Health Insurance. The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. October 2006.

6 Who are the Working Uninsured? Healthcare Behaviors Not having health insurance impacts their lifestyle Getting less health care for themselves than for their families Going to the ER the same amount as when they last had health insurance Getting less health care than they need (both preventive an at-need basis) Avoid risky situations Demographics The working uninsured are more likely to be women than men. They are age 25-54, with 1 or 2 children and have less than a college education. Most have a household income under $50,000. 92% have previously had health insurance. Purchase Motivators Their reasons for buying are similar to the traditional IM consumer See health insurance as protection Feel they are taking a risk by not having health insurance Having health insurance would give them peace of mind Scared that something might happen to them medically that they can’t afford to pay for Believe that a major health problem would be financially disastrous for them Worry about going into debt if they have to pay for medical care

7 Who are the Droppers? “I plan to stop offering health coverage to my employees due to rising costs.” “I would eliminate health insurance benefits if I could but my employees expect it.” Firmographics Growing businesses Older companies that have been offering HI for a long time. Construction, Health Care, Consulting, Agricultural Demographics Owners may have an individual medical plan themselves 30-59 years Employees: — earn 25-50K — white collar & blue collar — would turn down a job due to health insurance Attitudes Cost of health insurance is the driver of the dropping attitudes Generally negative attitudes toward health insurance Ability to offer is dependent on company performance See insurance as important, responsibility Worry about employees /family Highly price sensitive Behaviors They are shoppers Will work with agent Will administer payroll deduction Less likely to offer to dependents currently Don’t like the hassle of health insurance, Do not involve employees in decisions about health insurance Use an agent, but don’t speak with them often
