Labs You Should Have in Your Binder Blood Typing How do adaptations affect natural selection? PA Natural Selection with Beads Hardy-Weinberg Classifying Oaks – Genetic and Evolutionary Difference Zone of Inhibition Mealworm Lab Epidemiology Activity (Disease Detectives) Squid Dissection You may have any other labs we did this semester, but you may NOT have notes or Do Nows or any other homework.

Blood Typing Review 1.Draw a Punnett square showing all the possible blood types for the offspring produced by a type “O” mother and an a Type “AB” father Mrs. Clink is type “A” and Mr. Clink is type “O.” They have three children named Matthew, Tom, and Jay. Tom is type “O,” Matthew is type “A,” and Jay is type “AB.” Based on this information:  Mr. Clink must have the genotype ______  Mrs. Clink must have the genotype ______ because ___________ has blood type ______  Jay cannot be the child of these parents because neither parent has the allele _____.

Two parents think their baby was switched at the hospital. Its 1968, so DNA fingerprinting technology does not exist yet. The mother has blood type “O,” the father has blood type “AB,” and the baby has blood type “B.”  Mother’s genotype: _______  Father’s genotype: _______  Baby’s genotype: ______ or ________  Was the baby switched?

Two other parents think their baby was switched at the hospital. The mother has blood type “A,” the father has blood type “B,” and the baby has blood type “AB.”  Mother’s genotype: _______ or ________  Father’s genotype: _______ or ________  Baby’s genotype: ______  Was the baby switched?

Based on the information in this table, which man could not be the father of the baby? Justify your answer with a Punnett square. NameBlood Type MotherType A BabyType B Sammy the player Type O George the sleezeType AB The waiterType A The cable guyType B

Hardy-Weinberg Problems What are the evolutionary forces that can affect Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium? 1 in 1700 US Caucasian newborns have cystic fibrosis. C for normal is dominant over c for cystic fibrosis.  What percent of the above population have cystic fibrosis (cc or q 2 )?  Calculate q and p.  What percent of caucasian newborns are carriers of cystic fibrosis?

After graduation, you and 19 friends build a raft, sail to a deserted island, and start a new population, totally isolated from the world. Two of your friends carry (that is, are heterozygous for) the recessive c allele, which in homozygotes causes cystic fibrosis.  Assuming that the frequency of this allele does not change as the population grows, what will be the instance of cystic fibrosis on your island?

There are 40 total alleles of the 20 people of which 2 alleles are cystic fibrosis causing. 2/40 =.05 the c of the cystic fibrosis allele thus cc or q2 = (.05)2 =.0025 or.25% of the population will be born with cystic fibrosis.
