2 Institute Overview  The Chapel’s newest program to advance its mission to develop ambassadors of peace for the Beloved World Community  builds on a 35-year legacy of internationally recognized, ecumenical spiritual and vocational education  focuses on professional development needs of early career pastors  Funded by four-year, $500,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment  Chapel is one of only 11 institutions funded to develop programs for the 2013 Early Career Pastoral Leadership Development Initiative  Chapel is completing a $2.050 million Lilly grant for the Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation (PTEV) July 25, 2014 2

4 Institute Philosophy and Approach  The practice of ministry as an expression of the effect of what a minister does and who a minster is on the lives of people – not just a role he or she fills  A minister must function within and beyond church roles as a  Guarantor of Continuity  Celebrator of Change  Negotiator of Structure  Facilitator of Meaning  Practitioner of Cosmopolitan Ethics  The Institute offers a cyclical model of ministerial mentoring that sensitizes and supports early career pastors in carrying out these crucial functions in our 21 st century global society July 25, 2014 4

6 Institute Methodology  Intergenerational  The Institute partners seasoned, early career and aspiring pastoral leaders for shared developmental and mentoring experiences  Interdisciplinary  The Institute connects current and emerging pastoral leaders with business and community leaders for meaningful dialogues and interactions on a variety of topics  International and Interfaith  The Institute cultivates a global cosmopolitan and ecumenical view of current issues/events in communities around the world  Interpersonal  The Institute combines theoretical with practical teaching and learning through activities that challenge participants to engage in deep personal reflection and meaningful interaction with others July 25, 2014 6

7 Institute Program Elements  Two-year professional development program combines theory and practice  Total of 24 participants selected  12 fellows for 2014-2016 cohort (from pool of Atlanta applicants)  12 fellows for 2016-2018 cohort (from pool of national applicants)  Curriculum based on Beloved World Community ideas/ideals of ethics, nonviolence, service and harmony  Required activities per cohort include:  Six assemblies at Morehouse over two years  One international immersion experience  One summer internship for aspiring pastors at mentor’s church July 25, 2014 7

8 Institute Program Outcomes  Through the Institute for Pastoral Leadership, early career pastors are expected to develop:  compassionate awareness of themselves and others  supportive and accountable relationships with fellow clergy and network of institutes engaged in pastoral leadership development  supportive and accountable relationships with business/civic leaders and network of partnerships to serve local and global communities  an informed understanding of the myriad leadership challenges senior pastors face  a comprehensive and balanced strategy to address these challenges  nuanced perspectives foundational to informed decision making and relevant and appropriate action and  an embracing of their identity as global citizens and global leaders July 25, 2014 8

9 Selection Criteria Seasoned Clergy 10+ years in pastoral leadership Demonstrated leadership capacity Inducted or qualified for Morehouse CML/BP/CS Record of involvement/ service in diverse communities Early Career Pastors Graduate degree from ATS institution 3-7 years as senior pastor Exemplify traits of faithful servant scholar leadership Completion of IPL application Three letters of reference Skype interview Aspiring Ministers Current member of Morehouse College Chapel Assistants Preference given to junior and senior students Other Sector Leaders Demonstrated leadership in business, education, civic, or civil society role Record of involvement/ service in diverse communities July 25, 2014 9
