“An Enhanced Leaving Certificate”

2 LCVP - What is it? The LCVP is referred to as an enhanced Leaving Certificate in that it builds on and expands the traditional Leaving Cert. Many believe that the traditional LC is too academic, that means, to much emphasis is placed on the subjects and points and little, if any emphasis is placed on preparing the student for their adult and working life.

3 LCVP - What is it? The LCVP provides a balance between the traditional LC and the development of skills and qualities that will be needed in the lives of students on leaving school for further education or work. Students taking the LCVP must do the following: 2 LC subjects from the Dept list, French and two link modules.

5 Preparation for the World of Work
In this Module we look at: What is work? Why we work? The future of work Our personal profile - interests, hobbies, skills, what kind of person am I ? The working world - attitudes to work, self-employment, part-time work, finding the ideal job, what I want from work Job seeking skills Career Investigation Work Placement ( 1 wk)

6 Work Experience – 3rd – 7th March
In this Module we look at: What is Work Experience ? Finding w.e placements Job seeking skills Letter writing, form filling, Curriculum Vitae Interview structure Participation Work Issues Career Investigations

7 Enterprise Education In this module we look at: What is enterprise?
Enterprising skills and qualities Getting Started - finding our own ideas Making plans Marketing, Production, Advert & Promotion Business Matters Local Business Enterprise Local Voluntary and Community Enterp Enterprise Activity

8 How will the LCVP benefit you?
Students who do LCVP : are more knowledgeable of the world of work develop job-seeking skills undertake Work Experience ( 1 wk) are more innovative and enterprising are used to working in teams are familiar with setting up and running mini-enterprises gain experience using computers etc are able to take responsibility for your own learning

9 LCVP Exam Structure The Links Modules are assessed as part of the Leaving Certificate (They are recognised in points terms by the Institutes of Technology) Written Examination marks = 40% Portfolio of Coursework marks = 60%

10 LCVP Exam Structure The grading of the results is as follows
Pass % (worth 30 points) Merit % (worth 50 points) Distinction % (worth 70 points = C1 in Honours subject)

11 LCVP Exam Structure The Written Examination (40%)
Section A - answer questions from an audio-visual tape Section B - Case study given 4 weeks in advance of exam, with 3 questions then given on the exam paper Section C - 6 general questions, answer 4

Curriculum Vitae Summary Report Career investigation Enterprise/Action Plan Options - any 2 of below Diary of work experience Enterprise Report Recorded Interview Report on my own place

13 Tip: Try and get involved in activities so that you can write up a summary report on them and your portfolio will stand out from everyone else Each student should have AT LEAST 3 summary reports (typed) and 3 action plans to choose from Silly typing errors and poor presentation cost huge marks in LCVP Type up reports etc when they are fresh in your head as soon after event as possible. Complete them at home Key in all LCVP activities are the following activities: discuss ideas/plan/research/do/review/evaluate BACK UP ALL YOUR WORK OFTEN!!!!!!

14 Who can do LCVP? All students do LCVP in 5th year and complete their LCVP portfolio Students can do LCVP for exam purposes in 6th year if 1. they have these subject groupings 2. they are not exempt from Irish 3.Have a foreign language Specialist Groupings: 1.Construction Studies; Engineering; Design and Communication Graphics; Technology  - Any Two  2 Physics and Construction Studies or Engineering or Technology or Design & Communication Graphics 3 Agricultural Science and Construction Studies or Engineering or Technology or Design & Communication Graphics 4 Agricultural Science and Chemistry or Physics or Physics/Chemistry 5 Home Economics; Agricultural Science; Biology - Any Two 6 Home Economics and Art - Design Option or Craft Option 7 Accounting; Business; Economics - Any two   8 Physics and Chemistry 9 Biology and Chemistry or Physics or Physics/Chemistry 10 Biology and Agricultural Science 11 Art - Design Option or Craft Option and Design & Communication Graphics Services Groupings 12. 15 What do I need to have for LCVP
What do I need to have for LCVP? (By Friday this week or get your own – only Kingston pendrives allowed ON SALE FROM ANN NOLAN THIS THURS/FRIDAY €20 – for Zip folder, 8gb pendrive (€9), neckstrap, course handouts/notes for 2 yrs, refil pad, exam papers, printing and binding of portfolio. €10 – if you do not require pendrive but need notes, zip folder, exam papers, refil pad, printing & binding €5 – if you do not require pendrive and if not doing exam but will be participating in 5th yr
