2. Wednesday, November 6 17 Days Until Culmination! Objective: I will learn how to use in-text citations in my essay and give sources credit in a works cited page. Standards : W.9-10.1a-e Journal Question: Why is it important to include in-text citations and a works cited page?

3. Paragraphs #2 - 4 Look at the outline on the handout I gave you. How do the thesis statement and your paragraphs match up? Use 3 colors to identify each sentence in my example. (one additional color for sentence #4) Note: Paragraph #4 needs a counter claim and a refutation! It’s different than paragraph #2-3.

Go back to my example Here was my thesis statement: In my opinion, money should be spent so that school lunches are improved so students feel healthier, happier, and feel recharged for their afternoon classes. Reason #1 -> Paragraph #2 Students feel healthier Reason #2 -> Paragraph #3 Students feel happier Reason #3 -> Paragraph #4 Feel recharged <- 1 2 -> <- 3

5. In-text Citation In almost every case, you should cite in text using (Author’s Last name, Pg. #). Make sure the period is always OUTSIDE of the parentheses! However, sometimes you don’t have page numbers! If it’s a poem you can use line #s. If there is NO author, as a last resort, use the title of the work. See handouts for help.

6. Works Cited Page Look at the handouts for help. For the example I used in my paragraph, I got the article from a website (health.com). In my works cited page it would look like this: Rones, Nancy. Eat your way to health and happiness. November 2013..

7. Works Cited Page Use easybib.com to automatically format your works cited page!

8. Possible sources Some sources you could use for imperialism: Romero’s power point on imperialism “The White Man’s Burden” or “The Black Man’s Burden or “The Real White Man’s Burden” Books on imperialism Websites on imperialism Advertisements Romero gave you on imperialism

9. Time to write! Work on paragraph #2-4 on a separate piece of paper. Ms. U will walk around – ASK ME TO CHECK YOUR WORK! You may borrow some sources that I have at the front – White Man’s Burden, Black Man’s Burden, and the advertisements Romero gave you.
