2. Strict social rules Not supposed to talk about sex  no sex before marriage ▫Prostitution Nudity was inappropriate; men and women even had separate beaches It was considered rude to show your arms or legs Harsh punishment for crime

3. Women were “property” and had no rights Job was to keep the house running if they were married If they were single, women socialized a lot in their spare time No matter what class, a woman could either be an angel, or a whore Poor women got money through factory work or prostitution and rich woman earned none ▫Therefore, they needed to get married to rely on the man; it was their job to find someone.

4. Men Supposed to have a good job Marry a respectable woman Be a gentleman Married men usually wore white

5. Children Kids were considered less important They were raised strictly and had to work “dirty” jobs French, music, embroidery, or dancing were part of the education, received, if lucky, at home or a boarding school

6. Class System Upper class  value to continue family line ▫Wealthy; royal; best education; no need to work because they inherited money; ▫The middle class was the largest. ▫Working class: skilled and unskilled labor ▫Underclass: homeless, sick, unskilled
