Balcony Scene Personification: Giving human attributes or emotions to inanimate objects. “Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon.” Human emotions are given to moon and sun, thus personifying both of them.

Simile: comparing two dissimilar things that share a common trait. I have no joy in this contract to-night. It is too rash, to unadvised, too sudden’ Too like lightning, which doth cease to be Ere one can say it lightens.

Another similie My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee

Metaphor: comparison that does not use like or as: I have night’s cloak to hide me from… (night compared to a cloak)

Allusion: reference to god of mythology, hhistorical person, place or event. They say Jove laughs Jove: Roman name for Zeus. Sometimes thought of as Jupiter. God of Love here

Now old desire doth in his death-bed lie, An old love dies And young affection gapes to be his heir; And a new love replaces the old That fair for which love groan'd for and would die, The beautiful woman that he moaned over and would die for With tender Juliet match'd, is now not fair. When compared to Juliet is now not as beautiful.

Now Romeo is beloved and loves again, Now Romeo is loved and loves again Alike betwitched by the charm of looks, Both Juliet and Romeo are attracted to each other But to his foe supposed he must complain, But he must woo an enemy And she steal love's sweet bait from fearful hooks: And she too must be careful to love an enemy

Being held a foe, he may not have access Because she is an enemy he can’t easily meet her. To breathe such vows as lovers use to swear; To swear his love And she as much in love, her means much less And she has even less opportunity to meet him anywhere To meet her new-beloved any where:

But passion lends them power, time means, to meet But passion gives them power and the time to meet Tempering extremities with extreme sweet. Softening their hardships with sweet love

Do you believe in love at first sight? (Want to hear a story?)

Is their love too Rash? Fall in love at party In the next hour they agree to marry How do we know this is true love for Romeo? Who seems the more mature?

Balcony Scene Metaphor for LOVE

Juliet is the sun Metaphor: Romeo compares Juliet to the sun and the moon is jealous of her glory.

Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Why the heck are you a Montague.

That which we call a Rose by any other word would smell as sweet… So Romeo would were he not called Romeo. Names don’t matter.
