2 Objective: Students will provide a real life example in order to describe the processes of diffusion and osmosis. NEXT! Set up a note page for “OSMOSIS and DIFFUSION” Answer 1-3 Below at the top of your note page: Aishaya is baking cookies in the kitchen on the first level of her house. Her sister is sitting at the kitchen table, and her brother is upstairs in his bedroom. Aishaya opens the oven door to check on the cookies. 1.Which member of the family will smell the delicious cookies first? 2.Which member of the family will smell the cookies last? 3.Why do you think this is?

11 Start your notes What is a concentration gradient? CONCENTRATION GRADIENT: – A concentration gradient occurs where the concentration of something changes over a certain distance.

14 What is diffusion? DIFFUSION: – the movement of particles down a concentration gradient from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration

15 Is diffusion active or passive transport? Passive! It does not take energy!

17 Write your explanation in your notes under the heading Paper Towel Diffusion/Osmosis! Paper Towel Diffusion Osmosis! Take a break from notes… 1. Get a pipette, water and some paper towel. 2. Drop about 5 drops onto the paper towel. (Leave enough dry towel to clean up.) 3. What happens? How is this an example of diffusion?

18 Back to Notes! What is osmosis? OSMOSIS: – The movement of WATER down a concentration gradient from high concentration to low concentration. Is Osmosis active or passive transport? Passive! It does not require energy!

19 What is the difference between solute and solvent? Solute is the stuff that is being dissolved. Solvent is the liquid that dissolves the solute. Example: Water (solvent) dissolving salt (solute). Koolaid= SOLUTE Water= SOLVENT

20 Set Up A Piece of Paper for our next lab “RAISIN LAB” Scientific Question: What will happen to a raisin that is left in water over night? Hypothesis: If I leave a raisin in water then… Variables and Procedures: List to my directions! Write out the procedure in your own words Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: Control:

21 Procedure Fill your beaker with enough water to cover the raisin. Weigh your raisin using the digital scale. Measure your raisin using a ruler. Leave the raisin in over night to see what happens.
