What are balanced and unbalanced forces? By: Carly Fitzgerald and Hailey Woulfe

Tech Terms: Balanced Forces- Forces that are equal in size but opposite in direction. Force- Push or Pull Unbalanced forces- Forces that cause a change in the motion of an object

Balanced Forces:  Any push or pull is a force. To describe a force, you must know two things. You must know the size of the force and the direction of the force. Suppose two teams are playing tug of war. Each team is pulling with equal force, but in opposite directions. Neither team can make the other team move. You can also think of it as two people wrestling. They both push against each other with equal force, but in opposite directions.

QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! Question # 1- A ______ is a push or a pull. Question #2- Balanced forces can’t change an object’s ______. WORD BANK: Cats, Force, Pie, Speed, Acceleration, Motion, Gravitational Pull, Dumpster, Stones.

Unbalanced Forces:  Forces that create a change in the motion of an object are Unbalanced Forces. Unbalanced Forces are not equal and opposite.  If one of the teams in the tug of war game pulls harder than the other team, the forces wouldn’t be equal anymore. One team would be able to pull the other team down.

QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! QUICK QUIZ! Question #3- If you push against a wall, the wall pushes back with an equal but _____ _____.  Ice Cream  Opposite force  Opposite gravity  Jonas Brothers

Force and Motion: Unbalanced Forces can change the motion of an object in two ways:  When unbalanced forces act on an object at rest, the object will move.  When unbalanced forces act on a moving object, the velocity of the object will change. Remember that a change in velocity means a change in speed, direction, or both speed and direction.

Lesson Summary  Forces that are equal in size but opposite in direction are called balanced forces.  Balanced forces do not cause a change in the motion of objects.  Forces that cause a change in the motion of objects are called unbalanced forces.  Unbalanced forces can change the motion of an object in two ways.

Apply/ Analize- #6 on paper A skater is moving from east to west across a frozen pond. Her speed is 4 m/sec. Someone gives her a push. As a result of the push, her speed increases to 6m/sec in the same direction. A skater is moving from east to west across a frozen pond. Her speed is 4 m/sec. Someone gives her a push. As a result of the push, her speed increases to 6m/sec in the same direction. a)Is the push a balanced force or an unbalanced force? How do you know? b)In what direction was the push applied? How do you know? Please write this on a piece of loose leaf paper and hand it in to Hailey or Carly and we will grade them. Thank you.

Quick Quiz Answers: Question #1- A force is a push or a pull. Question #2- Balanced forces can’t change an object’s motion. Question #3- If you push against a wall, the wall pushes back with an equal but Opposite Force. (B)
