4. The Meditation: PASTOR: Lord, we are citizens of heaven. Our hearts belong to another world, a faraway city, the New Jerusalem. We want to be with you! Our treasures are there. PEOPLE: We pray, “Come quickly!” Lord Jesus. However, you have left us here – as ambassadors. We rarely see ourselves in such stately terms. We feel more like pilgrims, passing through. We do not imagine that we look like royal ambassadors. PASTOR: Nevertheless, we, in fact, are your ambassadors. Forgive us for not representing you well. Forgive us, for shrinking back from our role as your representative people. Forgive us for being timid and often silent. PEOPLE: In so many places in our cities, no one represents your kingdom – in some cases, sadly, you are misrepresented. Before councils and hearings, before boards and committees, to business owners and bankers, to the influential and powerful – we fail to consistently and intentionally represent you. 5. The Meditation: PASTOR: We Christians have ignored this role. Moving from our homes to our divided churches, we have chosen quiet, withdrawn lives – far too quiet. We have allowed whole cities and states, indeed, a nation to forget you. PEOPLE: Ambassadors. We have heard that some have introduced themselves to city leaders, to folks on their block, to fellow merchants at the Mall or businesses located in their neighborhoods. We have heard of preachers who have decided to ‘pastor their community’ and not just their congregations. PASTOR: Such actions seem “out of the box!” to us. What would it take for us to become an ambassador people? Tell us, to whom have you sent us? To whom are you sending me? People: What an honor! What a privilege! Help me to be your ambassador. 6. The Profile … The Shuar are one of several indigenous tribal groups which reside in the SouthEastern portion of Ecuador, a jungle/rainforest area. The Shuar gained notoriety for their custom of shrinking heads of victims. Eventually Ecuador had to outlaw the practice because the popularity of buying shrunken heads as souvenirs was driving the practice to continue. A rite of passage for a young man involves the drinking of water containing the extract of a bark that induces hallucinations. A belief of theirs has been that if someone dies from disease, the death was actually killed by invisible darts. 7. Prayer … Pray for the fiercely independent Shuar people. Recently, missionaries have been making inroads. Pray for Church of God connections. Pray that truth would overcome their animistic superstitions run deep. Pray for open doors, light for their hearts, a tender heart, a harvest among these people.
