Biogeochemical Tracers in Arctic Rivers: Linking the Pan-Arctic Watershed to the Arctic Ocean (The PARTNERS Project)

“Our overall objective is to use river water chemistry to study the origin and fates of continental runoff in the Arctic”

Discharge and Basin Areas of PARTNERS Rivers

Ob’ River at Salekhard

Yenisey River at Dudinka

PARTNERS Sample Flow Chart VECO

“Primary” PARTNERS Institutions and Key Personnel

*Each of the 6 rivers will be sampled 2X in 2003, 7X in 2004, 7X in 2005, and 2X in 2006 *Samples will be collected during all seasons, with at least 1 sample per year (2004 and 2005) through the ice Sampling Schedule

Constituents to be Analyzed

Constituents to be Analyzed - cont.

US D-96 Depth Integrating Sampler US SS-1 Teflon 14-L Churn Splitter Sampling Strategy *Same equipment and protocols at all sites *Collect depth-integrated samples in Teflon bags using US D-96, multiple verticals across channel *Composite verticals in Teflon churn splitter

WATERSHED CHAMP: PARTNERS will obtain biogeochemical data, including isotopic tracers, that will aid in understanding of catchment hydrology LAII/PACTS: PARTNERS will help close nutrient and carbon budgets for the arctic terrestrial zone COASTAL ISSUES LSI: PARTNERS will provide estimates of biogeochemical fluxes (nutrients, carbon, sediments, etc) to the arctic coastal zone ARCTIC OCEAN ISSUES OAII/SBI: PARTNERS will determine river tracer concentrations and fluxes needed to better follow riverine freshwater in the Arctic Ocean ENTIRE ARCTIC SYSTEM ARCSS/SEARCH: PARTNERS will provide data linking terrestrial and oceanic domains, and establish contemporary baseline of biogeochemical fluxes needed to detect future changes PARTNERS: Links to Arctic Research Programs
