Breakout Discussion 1 Facilitators Karen Butler-Purry - TAMU Kevin Tomsovic - UTK

Focused on possibilities for MOOCs, on-line courses, etc. Value to power community  MOOCs as flipped classroom or video textbooks  Develop for power community to share  Modules to attract/inform students, K-12 educators, freshmen/sophomores  Each have a different role or need  Modules to help researchers at interface (communications, power electronics)  Video wikipedia

MOOC and On-line courses Potential topics for NSF funding: Determine best practices of existing on-line power courses at various institutions. NSF- funded Best practices Workshop. Multi-institution collaborative projects to develop modules for MOOCs or flipped courses, including multi-disciplinary courses. Develop tools to reduce the time to develop MOOCs. Develop MOOCs/modules as an alternative to paper textbooks – video textbooks.

MOOC and On-line courses (cont.) Potential topics for NSF funding: What are some unique needs for Power Engineering related MOOCs. How do you include concepts that need hands on labs; for example, Bulk power systems courses. Are there unique software simulation needs? Good Topic for an I-Corps Learning team – what are features/characteristics are needed for modules to be utilized across institutions for MOOCs or flipped courses? Need material for on campus content Minute physics  Minute power on YouTube MOOC modules developed by senior projects

Assessment and Implementation How to assess?  Role for NSF to have projects that provide best practices; address cross campus issues  Need to evaluate materials in some context relative to stated outcomes  Learn from other fields and recent developments (power electronics MOOC, business courses)  Common core or standards recommendations or just a searchable database How to promote use?  Historical modules were not used  Need marketing – sustainability vs power engineering; iCorps?

Other areas of importance The so-called active grid (microgrid and DER)  DER integration  Modeling of new devices (power electronics)  Social behavioral models  Moving transmission solutions to distribution systems  Learn from other fields and recent developments (power electronics MOOC, business courses)  Big data  Policy and marketing training  Increased industry participation
