CHURCH OF SS. MARY & JOHN NUGEGODA Remembrance Sunday “ Vigilant Preparation for Death”

Leader Response We meet in the presence of God Hymn who knows our needs, hears our cries, feels our pain, and heals our wounds. 139

“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.” 1 Thess 4: 14 Introductory Sentence

Leader Blessed be God. Response Blessed be God’s reign forever Amen Invitation To Confession Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for God’s children.

Confession Silence Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Absolution May God our Father forgive us our sins and bring us to the eternal joy of his kingdom, where dust and ashes have no dominion. Amen.

Jesus Christ, the King of glory, Everlasting Son of God, Humble was your virgin mother, Hard the lonely path you trod: By your cross is sin defeated, Hell confronted face to face, Heaven opened to believers, Sinners justified by grace. The 2nd part of Te Deum Laudamus

Christ, at God’s right hand victorious, You will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants For whose freedom you have paid: Raise us up from dust to glory, Guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, Save your people, God, we pray. 8.7.8.7.D

Collect O God, lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth; lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust; lead us from hate to love, from war to peace. Let our hearts, our world, our universe, be filled with God’s peace, peace, peace. Amen

Ministry Of The Word

Old Testament Amos 5:18 - 24 18 How terrible it will be for you who long for the day of the Lord! What good will that day do you? For you it will be a day of darkness and not of light. 19 It will be like someone who runs from a lion and meets a bear! Or like someone who comes home and puts his hand on the wall—only to be bitten by a snake! 20 The day of theLord will bring darkness and not light; it will be a day of gloom, without any brightness.

21 The Lord says, “I hate your religious festivals; I cannot stand them! 22 When you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will not accept the animals you have fattened to bring me as offerings. 23 Stop your noisy songs; I do not want to listen to your harps. 24 Instead, let justice flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river that never goes dry.

Reader This is the word of the Lord Response Thanks be to God Psalm 78: 1 – 7 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing, I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord. Silence

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, 3 things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing, I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

4 We will not hide them from their children; we will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 5 He established a decree in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing, I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and tell them to their children 7 so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing, I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

New Testament 1 Thessalonians 4 : 13 – 18 13 Our friends, we want you to know the truth about those who have died, so that you will not be sad, as are those who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take back with Jesus those who have died believing in him. 15 What we are teaching you now is the Lord's teaching:

16 There will be the shout of command, the archangel's voice, the sound of God's trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died believing in Christ will rise to life first; 17 then we who are living at that time will be gathered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 18 So then, encourage one another with these words.

Silence Reader This is the word of the Lord Response Thanks be to God Hymn Gospel Acclamation Hallelu Yah! “Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” Mt 24: 42a, 44 296

Gospel Matthew.25:1 - 13 Response Glory to Christ Our Saviour “ At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there were ten young women who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise.3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any extra oil with them, 4 while the wise ones took containers full of oil for their lamps.

5 The bridegroom was late in coming, so they began to nod and fall asleep. 6 “It was already midnight when the cry rang out, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come and meet him!’ 7 The ten young women woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 Then the foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Let us have some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 ‘No, indeed,’ the wise ones answered, ‘there is not enough for you and for us. Go to the store and buy some for yourselves.’

10 So the foolish ones went off to buy some oil; and while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived. The five who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed. 11 “Later the others arrived. ‘Sir, sir! Let us in!’ they cried out. 12 ‘Certainly not! I don't know you,’ the bridegroom answered.” 13 And Jesus concluded, “Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.
