Translation as appropriation in global news Roberto A. Valdeón (Universidad de Oviedo) Jinan University, Zhuhai, 7 December 2013

Terminological issues: translation in CS Second, the latent meaning of any frame is often translated instantaneously by specific types of framing devices such as catchphrases, metaphors, sound bites, graphics (Nisbet 2010, 49). Kellsted was able to provide evidence that shifts over time in framing translated into shifts in public opinion (Brewer & Gross 2010, 172). Framing news in terms of its economic consequences for the audience is a translation of the journalistic news values proximity (De Vreese 2010, 190).

Transedition (Stetting 1989) Adaptation to the standard of efficient expression. Adaptation to the necessities of the final culture. Adaptation to the established function for the translated text in the new social context.

van Leeuwen (2006) Three kinds of decisions are discussed in turn: translation decisions affecting the English used, translation/adaptation decisions affecting journalistic style, and translation/adaptation decisions affecting cultural and ideological references in the source texts.

Stable sources: Original: The Paul Krugman columns in The New York Times A War on the Poor (31/10/2013) Translated/adapted for El País Una guerra contra los pobres (1/11/2013) Original: Editorial in Financial Times The Pain in Spain (2/2012) Appropriated by Expansión El dolor de España (2/2012)

Adaptation John Kasich, the Republican governor of Ohio, has done some surprising things lately. First, he did an end run around his state’s Legislature — controlled by his own party — to proceed with the federally funded expansion of Medicaid that is an important piece of Obamacare.

Appropriation Financial Times The worsening recession, partly self-inflicted by Spain’s effort to outdo the general eurozone fiscal masochism, will make them worse still. Expansión Y la recesión podría empeorar las cosas [And the recession might make things worse]

“Appropriation frequently affects a more decisive journey away from the informing source into a wholly new cultural product and domain” Sanders 2006, 26) “Adaptation and Appropriation: Is there a Limit?” (Hugo Vandal-Sirois and Georges L. Bastin) “readers cannot distinguished between source and target texts”
