2 Kim Baker Stage of Writing: Prewriting

3 4 th Grade GPS  ELA4W1 The student produces writing that establishes an appropriate organizational structure, sets a context and engages the reader, maintains a coherent focus throughout, and signals a satisfying closure. The student  a. Selects a focus, an organizational structure, and a point of view based on purpose, genre expectations, audience, length, and format requirements.

4 Primary Learning Outcome A. Students will plan their limerick prewriting poetry by choosing a topic, audience, and purpose.

5 Limerick Poetry  Purpose of limerick poetry is comedy  Has specific rhyming pattern  1 st,2 nd, and 5 th lines rhyme  3 rd and 4 th lines rhyme  AABBA pattern

6 Limerick Poetry  Has specific syllable pattern for each line  1 st,2 nd, and 5 th lines have 8-9 syllables  Each line must have the same amount of syllables  3 rd and 4 th lines have 5-6 syllables  Each line must have the same amount of syllables

7 Limerick Poetry- Prewriting Stage  Helps plan your writing  Will focus on  Topic: What are you writing about?  Audience: Who are you writing to with your limerick poem?  Purpose: Why are you writing your poem?

13 Limerick Poetry-Drafting Stage Georgia Performance Standard  ELA4W4 The student consistently uses a writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing. The student a. Plans and drafts independently and resourcefully.

14 Limerick Poetry-Drafting Stage Primary Learning Outcome  Students will construct a draft for a limerick poem using information from the graphic organizer used in the prewriting stage.

15 Limerick Poetry-Drafting Stage What is Limerick Poetry?  Five line poem made up of one couplet and one triplet  Rhyme Pattern: a a b b a  Lines 1, 2, and 5 have the same number of beats and rhyme  Lines 3 and 4 have the same number of beats and rhyme  Meant to be funny-last line should contain a punch line

16 Limerick Poetry-Drafting Stage Drafting  Use information from prewriting to create sentences  Label “rough draft”  Mark “X” on every other line to skip when writing  Develop sentences from prewriting graphic organizer  Focus on content instead of grammar and spelling
