2 Mathematics Education in Peru! Math 430: International Comparative Mathematics Education Seminar (3 credits) What is “Math”? What does it mean to “Do Math”? How do people learn math? How should math be taught? How is math education different in US and Peru? teaching philosophy and methods, teacher training, math curriculum, cultural attitudes Field trips to Peruvian schools to observe math classes Prepare and teach a math lesson to Peruvian students

3 Where Do We Go?

4 What Will We Do? Four days of class at UW Oshkosh (May 18-21). Three week trip to Peru (May 22- June 12). About 10 days in Lima, hosted by Pontifical Catholic University of Peru Class discussions led by UWO faculty Partner with math ed students at PUCP Visit math education class at PUCP Field trips to local schools Teach math lessons at Peruvian middle school Weekends of sightseeing in Lima and the Pacific Coast Week-long tour of Peru including the Amazonian Rainforest, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu.

8 We’ll stay at an actual Oasis, dune buggy and sand- board, and see sea lions and penguins!

9 We will hike and boat through the rainforest, and stay in a jungle lodge !
