1 Back to basics at Junctions In 2008 PDO suffered 216 road traffic accidents, 18 of them related to inappropriate driving at road junctions. These resulted in loss of live, injuries and damage. All could have been prevented by applying basic rules and adhering to the road safety regulations. Here are the accidents……..

2 Stop Sign 2 Bus entered a junction without stopping at the STOP sign resulting in a collision and 34 LTIs and three deaths 1

3 Stop Sign Driver didn’t stop or slow sufficiently and took the junction at speed resulting in the vehicle rollover

4 Stop Sign Driver did not stop or slow down sufficiently at the STOP sign causing the water tanker to rollover

5 Stop Sign The driver disobeyed the posted traffic sign “STOP” and joined the main road when traffic was approaching resulting in a collision

6 Stop Sign Driver didn’t stop or slow sufficiently and took the junction at speed resulting in the vehicle rollover

7 Stop Sign The driver disobeyed the STOP sign and joined the main road when traffic was approaching resulting in a collision and an LTI 1 2

8 Stop Sign Driver did not see the junction at night and drove over the T junction causing a collision with the pipe rack 2 LTIs

14 Give Way The driver didn’t stop at the STOP sign and failed to give way to the vehicle on the main road causing a collision 1 2

15 Give Way The driver didn’t stop at the STOP sign and failed to give way to the vehicle on the main road causing a collision

16 Cross Road Driver overtook a vehicle turning left at a junction resulting in a collision 1 2

17 Chevron Sign The driver did not slow down enough at the ‘’T’’ junction and collided with the wall. He was driving under the influence of alcohol.

18 Overtaking on Junction Driver overtook a vehicle turning left at a junction resulting in a collision 1 2

19 T- Junction Driver overtook a vehicle turning left at a junction resulting in a collision and 2 LTIs

20 Requirement  When approaching a STOP sign junction you slow down and MUST STOP.  You MUST STOP (Even if there is no other traffic) and give way.  You STOP always irrespective of traffic approaching or not or visibility,  Look left, right then left again.  Only then enter the junction when it is safe to do so.  Remember to allow time to accelerate up to speed after turning at the junction.  Do not overtake on Junctions
