What is Contact? Physical contact happens throughout a match so we must use the rule to help us decide what contact to penalise – “No player may come into contact with an opponent in such a way, either accidentally or deliberately, that it interferes with the play of the opponent” Something: That interferes with play That may infringe the rules (Rule 17)
Contact – The Signs? Not in control of the ball Body not balanced Not able to control footwork Loss of power Loss of speed Injured as a result Loss of composure
What is Contest? Something: we want to allow is even, safe and fair where the contact rule is not broken
What is Safe and Fair? Every game is different What are the expectations of the players What are the skills of the players What difference is there between leagues, club, Premier or Super League matches Safety is the key factor
Making the Right Decision Was it purely a contest Was it contact? – but can I play the advantage Was it contact – and I will penalise
Was it Purely a Contest? There was physical contact It didn’t interfere Therefore there has not been an infringement No rule has been broken Game continues Action No whistle No advantage to play
Was it Contact? But can I play the Advantage There was physical contact It did interfere Therefore there has been an infringement But can I play the advantage Action No whistle Signal and call ‘Advantage’
Was it Contact? And I Will Penalise There was physical contact It did interfere with a player Therefore there has been an infringement It is not beneficial to play advantage Actions Blow whistle Penalise the infringement
‘Soft Calls’ A waste of a call? Leads to confusion with the player concerned Did anything actually occur? Why did you penalise or call advantage? Have you inadvertently disrupted the flow of the game?
