INACCESSIBILITY FROM THE POINT OF DORMITORY 3 AND 2 AT METU NCC Z.Talha Bastem Eren Turan
What is Disabled Person Disabled Person Disabled person has been defined that the person who has a physical problem with his/her body to move like normal person. The World Healt Organization 1 define that Disabilities is an insinuating term, covering activity limitations, and involvement limits. An injury is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations.
DIFFERENT INTERACTIONS Disabled Person Cannot move or move fast Cannot see Cannot listen Cannot speak Cannot separate level Cannot hear... Non-Disabled Person Can move,see,listen,speak, separate level,hear etc.
SOLUTIONS SHOULD BE… Practical Safe As cheap as necessary.
DORMITORY 2 Dormitory 2 is the most nearest building to academic building It has rooms that divided three suit for each people It can be a big opportunity for the students who want to study their lessons own their own It has two block A block has canteen, Laundry room and study room B block has study room (2)
There is no sufficient holder to use for bath. There are lots of holders to buy. But, in this situation, we need one more which helps person to get in to shower easily What Are The Deficiency Of Dormitory Two
we have a narrow entrance The wheel chair person cannot pass the door The solution is enlargement of the door.
For the people who has slipped disk, permanent backache, can not open the fridge door The solution is moving the fridge to more higher level.
This problem is related to person who can not have equilibrium him/her self The problem is solved with increasing the height of the rail. If it is not fixed, there may be fatal injury.
This photograph was taken from fourth floor of second dormitory and there is no useful device that lift the disabled person from base to fourth floor. Solution is placing a elevator.
Good news, because there are ribbons to show the direction for the floor but it is not enough. Blind person cannot read which floor is it? There may be a table which have good view and included the letters for the blind people.
we have a wrongly placed door since wheelchair person need to area to turn The solution is changing the door place, it should have opened reverse direction. And also for the blind person the grip place is a risk.
The window placed wrong normal person can open it but disable person can not The solution is to design new rooms for each person who has a different disabilities.
DORMITORY 3 Dormitory 3 is used by the half of the student which are study in Middle East Technical University. It has designed for two or four students It is near to the center of the campus and has more social activity than other dormitory. As an extra information, it has canteen that has a more specific menu than other canteens. (3)
OBSERVED PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS As you can see the cabinet is cited pretty much high level. The operation is for the people who use wheelchair and short people The operation can create a solution with a device that decreased the level of cabinet.
The door type was wrong. This problem is for everyone. The adjustment can be done by changing the door with sliding door.
This problem is related to with person who can not use their legs and who has a leveling problems The adjustment may be a cutting the necessary parts If precautions are not handeled, there will be injury even if person does not have any physical problem
As you see in photo; there is not enough space to move for disabled people especially wheelchair users because this room designed for 4 people. However; space area for disabled people had not be thought. The problem is solved with enlargement of space area.
As you see in photo; the parapet of staircase had not designed for blind people. Since, the parapets have porous and rigid iron. This situation can be difficulty for blind people. The problem is solved by warning system with sound and elastic material instead of iron. The new sound system works with electrical code which is written. Thanks to this, blind people can come down ladder or up.
ALL IN ALL Universal design provides that design reach its aim and design without aim should not target anytime. (6) (5) (4)
