3 Think back to your own school/university experience. What was the best group-based learning activity you experienced? Describe it. What was good about it and what did you learn? What was the worst group-based learning activity you experienced? Describe it. What was bad about it and what did you learn? 3 Learning in a group

4 Traditionally we teach using a combination of Large group lectures (30-500) Small group seminars (10-25) Group project work increasingly being used (but still seen as innovative). Discussion Compare the main characteristics of the three approaches: Role/responsibilities of teacher. Role/responsibilities of student. Expectations before, during and after. Learning outcomes (knowledge, transferable skills etc.) Location/environment Role of technology 4 Teaching groups in University

5 We are the team responsible for the module ‘Telling the Time’. Split into three groups. Imagine you have been asked to: 1. Design and deliver three one-hour lectures to a group of 250 students 2. Design and deliver a two hour workshop to a group of 12 students 3. Design and Coordinate a group project.10 groups of 5 students must design and carry out a research project and submit a group report. Make a Hopes and Fears list for your task. Hopes: What do you really hope your activity will turn out like? What are you aiming to achieve? Fears: What are your worst fears? What could go wrong? 5 Challenges
