1 St. Edward Catholic Church
BAPTISM WELCOME TO ALL CONGRATULATIONS PAPERWORK COMPLETION REQUIREMENT TO ATTEND THE CLASS St. Edward Catholic Church RCIA PROGRAM

2 WHY YOU ARE HERE “Catholic Christianity is a demanding religion. Many people in many lands converted to the faith but without adequate preparation of mind and heart, and with sad consequences as a result. Lacking in depth of understanding or commitment, or injudiciously baptized in large numbers, the neophytes later drifted back to their superstitions or fell into a curious mixture of Christianity, animism, and moral customs that were incompatible with the high ethical requirements of the Gospel.” (Vatican II)

3 Baptism Overview WHAT, WHY, HOW (the rite) SIX SACRAMENTAL EFFECTS
SCRIPTURE SUPPORT INFANT BAPTISM ORIGINAL SIN, ADOPTION, GRACE THE RITE AND RESPONSIBILITIES BAPTISM PREP DIVIDED INTO TWO SESSIONS AS SHOWN TONIGHT IS “THE CRISTIAN FAMILY TODAY

5 FUTURE QUESTIONS SECTION TWO: THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH
CHAPTER ONE: SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION ARTICLE 1: THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

6 Why We Baptize “Unless a man is reborn in water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Jn 3:5) Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Matt 28:19)

7 WHY cont. Required to enter kingdom of heaven
Directed by Christ himself We (the Church) know of no other way As the Apostles were directed to baptize we too are directed to be baptized. (Council of Trent)

8 SACRAMENTAL EFFECTS PURIFICATION FROM SIN
FORGIVENESS OF ORIGINAL AND PERSONAL SIN REMOVAL OF ALL PUNISHMENT TEMPORAL CONSEQUENCES REMAIN NEW BIRTH IN THE HOLY SPIRIT ADOPTED SON OF GOD BELIEF IN GOD, HOPE, LOVE POWER TO LIVE AND ACT W/ HOLY SPIRIT PROMISE OF SALVATION

9 SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. (Jn 3:22) He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mk 16:15-16) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." (Acts 2:38)

10 INFANT BAPTISM Explicit testimony in 2nd century and implicit in 1st century. One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home… (Acts 16:14-15) At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. (Acts 16:33) Crispus, the synagogue ruler, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized. (Acts 18:8) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." (Acts 2:38) Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else. (1Cor1:16)

11 Infant Baptism cont. Baptism is called the “circumcision of Christ”
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, “ (Col 2: 9-11) Circumcision occurred 8 days after birth. Babies did not understand the significance of circumcision – it was the parents responsibility for the spiritual well being of their children. We inoculate children against “physical disease”, is there no logical parallel for their spiritual protection?

12 Original Sin The clearest revelation on original sin is found in the Epistles of St. Paul, especially Romans 5: St. Paul writes: Then as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man's act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous. [Rom 5:18-19] Adam's original disobedience made us all sinners, while Christ's obedience on the Cross saves us from our sins. St. Paul also writes: Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned. [Rom 5:12] Unless you are baptized, you cannot enter Heaven. Die spiritually St Paul

13 Original Sin What was the original sin? Disobedience.
Wanting to be God and rejecting the gift from God. Where does original sin come from? Inherited We cannot buy our way in…only God can forgive.; we can only forgive those things that have occurred against us (and even that is hard – to forgive others). None of us have clean slates.

14 ADOPTION and GRACE But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption. As proof that you are children, God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.” (Galatians 4:4-7) It is a “gift” and we need only to ask.

15 What Do You Ask Of God’s Church?
What is a Sacrament? An outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace Baltimore Catechism A visible sign of the invisible grace of salvation in Christ… Celebrated in ritual, Lived in witness. Grace is free Grace is a gift Grace enables us Reason and logic to get to God. Car is less complex than us. Who told you about God…parent…who told them...who told them…etc Adam -> Adame’ = (Greek) sexless earth creature---no eve Adam = Son of earth Eve’ = mother of earth Marriage : Adam & Eve > trinity Contraception - Outward signs of baptism – water, words, Promise: to raise the children in the faith --- covenant promise to God Make me human: conscience, free will, Witnesses: godparents, parents, priests, deacons, God, Holy Spirit…

16 What Do You Ask of God’s Church?
SIGN - points to something else so clearly that it makes the reality of that which it points to present. SYMBOL - is a sign consisting of two parts, in such a way that the whole is only visible when the two halves are brought together. Adoption- ?Anyone adopted? Can you keep light of faith in that child Parents: no requirements Godparents: must have requirements Witness cannot be held up as a good example as a practicing catholic Can’t choose Uncle Bill…because its his turn…NO…must be example Choose godparents well! Why is scripture read at baptism – john chapter 1 – the word is God Bible in home? Jesus is the Word of God. NOTE: anointing is on the baby’s chest over heart…make sure gown allows
