14.  The colors black, white, gray, and variations of brown are included in the color family called earth tones.  The use of different types of browns and grays can suggest a rural aspect to many earth tone paintings.  The dullness of earth tone color schemes can help to quiet the paintings and give them a quality of seriousness.
