3 Notes TCP/IP Based Networks TCP/IP is a suite of protocols Internet is based on TCP/IP IP is Internet protocol at the network layer level TCP is connection-oriented transport protocol and ensures end-to-end connection UDP is connectionless transport protocol and provides datagram service Internet email and much of the network mgmt. messages are based on UDP/IP ICMP part of TCP/IP suite Chapter 1 Data Communications and NM Overview Network Management: Principles and Practice © Mani Subramanian 2010

4 Notes Internet Configuration Walk through the scenario of email from Joe to Sally Chapter 1 Data Communications and NM Overview Network Management: Principles and Practice © Mani Subramanian 2010

5 Notes Broadband Network Chapter 1 Data Communications and NM Overview Figure 1.19 Broadband Network Segments and Technologies Network Management: Principles and Practice © Mani Subramanian 2010

6 Notes Broadband Access Networks Chapter 1 Data Communications and NM Overview Network Management: Principles and Practice © Mani Subramanian 2010

Notes Information Technology Services 1-3 IT Services Computer and Data Processing Services Networking services System resources Application resources Server resources Storage and retrieval Back up / Archival Telecommunication Services Voice & Video services Network Management System Management Network management is concerned with managing the transportation of information System management deals with managing system resources Network Management Overview  Copyright 1998 Mani Subramanian

Notes 3-3 NM Basics Network Management Components Network Elements (Objects): workstations, hubs, bridges, routers… Network Management Agent Software that monitors network elements Reports to NMS (Network Management System) Responds to queries from NMS Reports alarms to NMS May be stand alone unit or embedded in an element Network Management Overview  Copyright 1998 Mani Subramanian

Notes 3-4 NM Basics Network Management System (NMS) Presents a global, topological, or geographical picture of the network Presents visual alarms of faults Helps localize problems that occur Queries agents for status of network elements Accepts alarm notifications from network management agents Network Management Components (cont.) Network Management Overview  Copyright 1998 Mani Subramanian

Notes 3-10 NM Basics Manager of Managers Here a Manager of Managers (MoM) monitors several subnetworks at once, by integrating the data obtained from various Agent NMSs. Network Management Overview  Copyright 1998 Mani Subramanian

3-11 NM Basics Notes SNMPv1 Architecture The get-request message is generated by the manager. Value of an object is a scalar variable. The get-next-request (or simply get-next) obtains the value of the next instance of the object in the Management Information Base (MIB) tree. The set-request is generated by the manager to initialize or reset the value of an object. The get response message is generated by the agent in response to get-request, get-next, or set-request from the manager. Trap is unsolicited alarm sent by agent to the manager.
