Right Triangle in Real Life (An Application to Right Triangle Trigonometry) The concept of the right triangle, blah, blah, blah… Have you Experienced this…?

Introduction Learning Areas Levels Objectives Software Description Mathematics 3 rd year Science Curriculum At the end of the activity the students should be able to solve word problems on Right triangle trigonometry PowerPoint presentation, HotPotatoes This Microlesson was made to catch the interest of the students and let them analyze effectively word problems in real life situation.

The Design of the ICT Integration Activity Objective: Learners: Duration of Activity: The objective of this microLesson is to catch the interest if the students and effectively let them analyze and solve word problems in real life situations. 3 rd Year Science Curriculum Students microLESSON activity – 1 hour Students Output - 1 week

The Design of the ICT Integration Activity Implementation: 1.The teacher explains Right triangle trigonometry concepts using chalk and blackboard 2.Five students per computer used the Microlesson in the Information Technology Room after the teacher’s explanation 3.After the microLesson, the students made their own right triangle trigonometry related problems, solve it and apply the concepts of the lesson in real-life. 4.Students present their respective outputs using MS PowerPoint or MS Movie Maker and passed through e- mail.

Teacher Reflection When I first introduced the lesson to the class, I observed that students were motivated to work and enjoyed what they were doing. They performed the activity with minimal supervision from me and got good results in their evaluation. It struck me to realize that my profession needs a lot of creative ways in challenging students to be at their best. These innovations tend to catch their interest, so their learning will be more effective.

Student Perspective The students’ reactions went beyond what I had hoped them to be. These are –The students performed the activity actively –they got very good results in the evaluation –they worked independently –they made excellent outputs and –they really enjoyed activity. They even asked me to make another activity similar to it.

Self-Assessment During the first introduction of the lesson, the students were just asked to explain their solutions of the given problems in the lesson using MS PowerPoint. When I presented this lesson to the 4th Innovative Teachers’ Leadership Awards by Microsoft, two judges suggested that I need to develop the students output since plain explanation of the problems using MS PowerPoint is not a challenging thing for 3rd year students. I followed the judges’ suggestion and found that it was effective.

Self-Assessment I find the designing and conceptualization of the lesson difficult since we must consider the effectiveness of the lesson and how to make it enjoyable to the students. The easy part was the implementation. As a whole, the students find the lesson challenging, doing the activity on the Microlesson was enjoyable, but doing their output was difficult since they need to make their own word problems, solve it and applying the concepts of right triangle trigonometry in real-life situations.

Self-Assessment This microLesson was made as an output of the MicroLessons Seminar that we had in our Department. We were asked to make/design our own microLesson and apply it in our class. The implementation was a success and this lesson was chosen as one of the top ten finalist of the 4th ITLA by Microsoft.
