5 Ways in which counselors assist students: Help students stay on track for on-time graduation Personal issues: friends, family, school, general Crisis intervention and support, mediation Academic support, advisement, and encouragement

6 Our goal today: Introduce you to Auburn Riverside High School Give you an Auburn School District catalog (name) Help you learn how to register for classes next year

7 SCHEDULE School starts at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m. 6 classes per day – approx. 55 min. each 5 minute passing time 2 lunches determined by 4 th period class Lockers are available

8 How does high school differ from middle school? Non-attendance impacts grades significantly Treated as a young adult responsible for actions and decisions The teacher/student relationship is a partnership. Need to talk to your teachers Less drama and fewer rumors. Fighting and “drama” are considered immature TRANSITION: FREEDOM, OPPORTUNITY, SELF-RESPECT

12 Advice from Counselors:  Take the most rigorous classes you can (family access) (family access)  Maintain highest grades possible (transcript)  Get involved  Develop clear goals for your future  Begin networking with your teachers, counselor, coaches, etc.  Stay organized—use planners and calendars  Learn to be resilient

13 What can you do to prepare for high school NOW?  Attend school every day (absences hugely affect grades)  Practice taking notes in core classes—science, math, social studies  Complete every assignment and turn in on due date  Ask your teacher for help, increase your class participation  Study over time for a test rather than cramming  Improve your ability to memorize, summarize, and integrate knowledge

23 Registration Sheet  Due to course availability students are not able to always get their first choice in courses. It is very important that students also select alternates. List alternates in the boxes on the left of the selection sheet in rank order (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd …) selection sheet in rank order (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd …) CTE 135 Digitools

24 Finally, make sure a parent and you have signed the form before it’s turned in

25  Next Friday, March 2, you will bring your completed registration sheet (your signature and your parent’s signature and teacher initials for honors classes).  We will meet in the library or computer lab and you will enter your course selections for next year by code using Family Access. It’s easy!!

26 Things to think about…  World languages  Sports physicals – after June 1  Letter sent in early August  RAVEN day—August 14  First day of school  Forms are due to us next Friday, March 2

27 More things to think about… Do we get lockers? Are we going to be in class with seniors? If I take Algebra 1/2 now is this a high school credit? Who is my counselor? When can I take a higher level PE like weight lifting?
