FIELD TRIP TO FLORENCE THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7 THROUGH 10, 2013 PART 3 OF 4 PARTS Piazza della Signoria by Klaas Reimann-Philipp The sketches are organized into four slide shows related to the assignments, and in alphabetical order by last name, with each student represented by three or four sketches.
III. Urban Space: Around the Uffizi and the Piazza della Signoria: Diagram the urban space; the open area in conjunction with the surrounding framework of the buildings. How are views and focal points reinforced by the ground surface treatment, building placements, wall angles, and façade articulations? How does the river relate to this ensemble? Can you find anything unusual about the Porta delle Suppliche? Around the Duomo: Again, diagram the urban space. Are there ways in which the urban fabric (the open spaces in conjunction with the massing of the buildings) reinforces the idea of membership in a community, or the idea of celebrating the initiation into that community?
