TAKE MY MOTIVES and my heart Matthew 6 v 1 - 14 1 Thessalonians 2 v 1 - 12
Take my life and let it be All you purpose, Lord, for me: Consecrate my passing days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my motives and my will, All your purpose to fulfil; Take my heart – it is your own, It shall be your royal throne.
Take my motives and my will, All your purpose to fulfil; Take my heart – it is your own, It shall be your royal throne. Why am I doing this? Who am I doing this for? Who sees my motives? What will I gain? How do I check the reasons for my motives? What and who motivates me and what I do with my life?
WHAT MOTIVATES OUR FAITH Luke 3 v 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptised by him “you brood of vipers. Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath”
WHAT MOTIVATES US TO PRAY and what stops us James 4 v 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives
LEARN TO IDENTIFY OUR MOTIVES Proverbs 21 v 2 All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart
HAVE OUR MOTIVES GOT THE RIGHT REASONS Matthew 6 v 16 When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting, I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full
EVEN DOING THE GOOD THING CAN BE FOR THE WRONG REASON Matthew 6 v 3-4 When you give to the needy do not let your left hand know what your left hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you in full
Thomas Beckett “The last temptation is the greatest treason. To do the right thing for the wrong reason”
JESUS SEES OUR MOTIVES and only He can expose them 1 Corinthians 4 v 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time, wait till the Lord come. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.
OTHERS MUST SEE OUR MOTIVES ARE PURE 1 Thessalonians 2 v 3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor or we trying to trick you.
WE ARE NOT ANSWERABLE FOR SOMEONE ELSES’S MOTIVES Philippians 1 v18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached, and because of this I rejoice.
LOVE SHOULD BE OUR MOTIVE 1 Corinthians 13 v 1 If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol.
Jesus I could sing in the tongues of men and angels But if I have not love I am just a clanging symbol, and empty sound X 2
This is a love song, Jesus a love song to you. A song of devotion, of reverent passion Saviour a love song to you.
Jesus I could pray with a faith that moves a mountain, but if I have not love it is just a noise resounding, an empty sound X 2
This is a love song, this is a love song, Jesus a love song, to you. A song of devotion, of reverent passion, Saviour a love song to you.
