Georgia Performance Standards SS5H6: Explain the reasons for Americas involvement in World War II. Describe Germanys aggression in Europe and Japanese aggression in Asia. Describe major events in the war in both Europe and the Pacific; include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, and the Holocaust. Discuss President Trumans decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Identify Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hiroto, Truman, Mussolini, and Hitler. Describe the effects of rationing and the changing role of women and African Americans; including Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen. Explain the U.S. role in the formation of the United Nations.
Causes of the War 1.Treaty of Versailles (after W.W. I) A. Germany lost land to surrounding nations B. War Reparations 1) Allies collect $ to pay back war debts to U.S. 2) Germany must pay $57 trillion (modern equivalent) 3) Bankrupted the German economy & embarrassed Germans
Causes of the War 2. Rise of Dictators and Fascism a. Economic Depression, especially in Germany, made the citizens feel desperate for help. Adolph Hitler provided the hope Germans were looking for. He primarily blamed Jews for Germanys problems. Hitler lead The National Socialists, or Nazis, which brought fascism to Germany. b. Benito Mussolini brought fascism to Italy. c. Prime Minister, Hideki Tojo brought a militaristic government to Japan under the Emperor, Hirohito.
