 The symbol for barium is Ba.  It is a silvery white metal.  It has a boiling point of 1640 °C  Density of 3.5 g.cm-3 at a temperature of 20°C  It has an atomic mass of 137.33 g John Salyerds

History of Barium  Barium was discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphrey Davy in London England. The origin of the name is from the Greek word barys which means heavy or dense. Barium is the 14 th most abundant element.

Barium uses  Barium is often used in electrodes in sparkplugs.  Vacuum tubes as a drying and oxygen removing agent.  Barium also gives fireworks a green color when added with a different chemicals; Barium nitrate and chlorate.

Chronic and acute effects  Some chronic effects of barium are paralysis and possibly death. Some acute effects are skin tingling, breathing difficulties and increased blood pressure.  Some effects on the environment are it easily mixes with water and is poisonous.

Exposure limits  The minimum amount of barium that you can be exposed to is.2 mg a day. This limit is through water and air exposure.  The minimum amount that can be found in your water at once is 2 ppm.

Where it occurs  Barium occurs in water a lot because it bonds easily with water because of the hydrogen atom.  Barium is almost never found by itself in pure form.  Barium often comes off rocks and then leech off into surface water that ends up being drinking water.  Cannot occur in soil

Where has it occurred? from 1987 to 1993 in the states Arizona, Utah and Texas had released over 57 million lbs of Barium compounds into water from copper smelting companies. Texas was the main direct release of the Barium compounds.

How to reduce barium in water  How can we get barium out of the water sources?  EPA approved water treating methods are…  Ion Exchange  Reverse Osmosis  Lime Softening  And Electrodialysis

True or False?!?! The minimum exposure is 4ppm. Lime softening is an approved method of removing barium from water. Can occur in soil. Can give fireworks a green color.
