2 The Doctoral Researcher Development Programme University of Westminster  Launched 2012/13  Currently running provision for 1 st and 2 nd Years  Provision roll out to 3rd & 4 th years in 2014/15  Cohort intake 80-100 per academic year  Cohorts start in September and January each year  Diverse student body (incl PT and international)

3 RATIONALE  QAA Audit of Research Degree Programmes 2006  UoW Training Programme Review Group  Launch of the Researcher Development Framework

4 DRDP PRINCIPLES  Enabling doctoral researcher development  Accessible to all modes of study  Encouraging self-directed development and reflective practice  Continuous development supported by burst-mode delivery  Co-delivered by academics and researcher development experts/professionals  Provision underpins/reinforces the key academic stages

5 DESIGN PROCESS STAGE 1  Mapped existing provision against the RDF  Gap Analysis – against all 63 RDF Descriptors  Agreed key delivery responsibility for each RDF Descriptor (e.g. Supervisor, Faculty, University) STAGE 2  Development of new programme Thematic strands : key descriptors grouped together Mapped across academic years

6 COHORT APPROACH! Comparatively small PGR community Provision delivered on a cohort basis is feasible Programme structure supports PGR Community/Culture reinforces key messages and themes throughout the programme: Faculty Workshops University Workshops Specialist Skills Sessions Supervisor Doctoral Researcher PDP and Reflective Practice

7 SOME CRITICAL REFLECTIONS Success requires University Buy-In and Engagement Supervisors  programme engagement and support Researchers  co-delivery and programme development; capacity building Doctoral Researchers  high pressure to complete, competing interests nature of development activity: long term benefits are not obvious initially
