1 The Acropolis of Athens A True Wonder to Think About…

2 Ancient Athens 432 BC- 480 BC The Acropolis is 300 meters long and 150 meters wide and it rises up 70 meters from the ground. Highest point in town is “acropolis” in Greek- that is how it earned its name. The Acropolis was built on the Sacred Rock. People named Phidias, Ictinus, and Callicrates were important in the reconstruction of the Acropolis. In Ancient Greece, the Acropolis was a very important place for worship and habitation. A great amount of the original structure was demolished in 480 BC when the Persians came for an invasion of Athens.

3 Modern day Athens 2007- Present In the year 2007, the Acropolis of Athens was distinguished as an important structure on the European Workd Heritage list. The most well known site is the Parthenon. The Acropolis is currently a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was also chosen as a finalist in the deciding of the New 7 wonders of the world. Greeks are trying hard to preserve this wonderful structure, and the buildings on it. This wonder is definitely something to ponder.

4 This photo very well shows the remains of the Parthenon.
