doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 1 Proposal how to measure RF sensitivity for WPP Niels van Erven 3Com

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 2 Introduction Goal is the identify an measurement set-up which is capable to measure the “true” receiver performance of a DUT, with a low investment.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 3 Problem A receiver test measurement, done with coax cables (connected), does not guarantee the true value of the sensitivity. solution 1) identify the radiation pattern. 2) perform the radiated sensitivity.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 4 measurement set-up to identify radiation pattern

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 5 Inside of the anechoic box

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 6 Some basics for the test set-up 1) be aware of far field distance. Distance between DUT antenna and pick up antenna must meet:, with D as the antenna dimension 2) propagation attenuation: Path loss= (32.4 +20log F (MHz) +20log D (km)), with F = Frequency in MHz and D= Distance in Kilometers 3) use a reference antenna to make sure there are no reflections inside the anechoic box. 4) correct coupling (H-plane / E-plane)

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 7 Dual band dipole

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 8 PC card at 2.4 GHz

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 9 Measurement results of the “radiated” sensitivity

doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/0346 Submission March 04 Niels van Erven, 3ComSlide 10 Conclusion It doesn’t require a large investment to get a test set-up which is capable to identify the “true” RF sensitivity It is recommended to perform radiated measurements for receiver characterization and some TX parameters, but connected measurements for most of the other parameters
