1 Computing for Life, Medical & Clinical Sciences Symposium Breakout Session Chaired by Prof Peter Coveney 28 June 2012 Symposium 2012

2 Computing for Life, Medical & Clinical Sciences Has the potential to revolutionize healthcare and biomedical research Can generate large amounts of useful data However, requires the high performance computing capacity and e-infrastructure to analyse, manipulate, and utilise that data Symposium 2012

3 UK Investment in E-Infrastructure In Feb 2011, the EBI received £75M from BIS for the European Life-science Infrastructure for Biological Information (ELIXIR) project In Jan 2012, the Government earmarked £168 million to improve Britain's HPC capability and wider e-infrastructure Of this, £3.5M has come to UCL as part of the e-Infrastructure South Consortium (UCL, Oxford Bristol, & Southampton) The UK E-Infrastructure Leadership Council was established in Mar 2012 to act as a national advisory body on e-Infrastructure The UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology is working on a special project on Data, Algorithms & Modelling Symposium 2012
