THE FLATS - Keynote B By Craig Bezant Novel Study, Term _, ____ Insert Full Name Here Insert Class Here

CHAPTERS 6 TO 8 X Why would men dress in black suits in the desert? Can you find any information about conspiracy stories involving men in black suits? Why would the author have chosen to have these characters portrayed in such a way? WOW! Did you know Jaden ’ s surname is an anagram? It reflects his behaviour.

CHAPTERS 6 TO 8 X RESEARCH: How can a werewolf roam during the day? Briefly research werewolves (lycanthropes) and list any interesting information you find, especially on a lycaon werewolf. Cool! Many countries have their own variation of the werewolf tale, with their own superstitions about how to ward off such creatures. How many tales can you find?

CHAPTER 9 X CHALLENGE: Blood doesn’t actually taste like copper, even though most people describe it this way. What metal does it actually taste like and why? Share this interesting fact. Did you know: Getting facts right in a story is very important, even if it is a fictional story.

CHAPTER 10 X What do you think has happened to Jaden? Why was Emily so eager to leave him at The Flats? Do you think this was the right decision?

CHAPTERS 12 TO 13 X There are several references (in the novel) to Onslow once being a ghost town. Why was it a ghost town (and what was once found there)? Did you know: There really are two towns named Onslow, further north in Western Australia, and one of those is also a ghost town. The author saw a photo of the ghost town and liked its name so much he used it here, but means no disrespect to the real town.

CHAPTERS 12 TO 13 X CHALLENGE: Can you list other Australian towns that became ghost towns for the same reason?

CHAPTERS 12 TO 13 X EXPLORE: Do you think the town’s history is just a part of the setting, or will this background information effect the plot of the novel? Explain.

CHAPTER 13 X EXTENSION: Ash’s mother makes a reference to Harold Lasseter and Lasseter’s Reef. Research and briefly retell this Australian legend. Did you know? The author loved the legend of Lasseter ’ s Reef since reading Mark Greenwood ’ s story, then researched the legend heavily - you can find Lasseter ’ s diary in many local libraries! The author has written his own twist on the legend. You will read it soon...

CHAPTERS 6 TO 13 X What do we know about Emily’s father? How do you think the author will use him in the plot?

PREDICTION #2 X Okay, now that we know more about the setting, the characters, and have a been given quite a few clues (or plot devices) to tell us what may or may not happen in the novel, what do you predict will happen next?
