Preparing for the CD-2 Review Elton Smith Hall D Collaboration Meeting October 12-14, 2006

Internal FY06 Project Milestones  Hall D Tagging Spectrometer and Photon Beamline Review (23-Jan-06) Report on barrel calorimeter fiber tests (30-Jun-06) Report on tagger prototyping (30-Jun-06) Report on Cerenkov readout and optics studies (31-Jul-06) Report on UPV prototyping (31-Jul-06) Report on FADC prototyping (31-Aug-06) Report on auxiliary electronics prototyping (31-Aug-06) Report on full-scale prototypes of FDCs and CDCs (30-Sep-06)  Recommendation #27 IPR Sec 2.5 (30-Jun-07)

Outcome of the Upgrade Status Review (June 2006) The main recommendation was to schedule a “Mini-Review” to assess CD-2 readiness at mid-year Pre-briefing material due Dec 1 Main emphasis is on “resource-loaded schedule” TJSO-led review Dec 19-21 Lehman/DOE-NP review results late Jan

Resource-loaded schedule schedule For “Mini-review” match schedule to Cost Book Cost book is unchanged since 2005 except for minor changes in fy07 Schedule will be updated next spring with realistic updated costs and plans in preparation for CD-2

Outcome of the Upgrade Status Review (June 2006) Final report: 19 recommendations For Detector Systems: Continue development of full detector simulation and reconstruction studies with the goal of validating that detector designs meet physics performance requirements for Halls B and D. Conduct external peer reviews of Hall B and D detector designs and of superconducting magnet designs in time to impact the baseline designs of these subsystems. November Software Workshop to address first bullet

Hall D Milestones for FY07 Decision on readout for barrel calorimeter Drift chamber design requirements finalized (Rec #27)

Safety list for each subsystem Safety issues that might arise during preparations and construction List of ways to mitigate those issues Specific safety reviews that might be needed Send them to me by the end of this meeting

FY07 R&D Reports WBSDescription from R&D PlanSpecific Technical DeliverableCompletion Milestone 1.1.5 R&D: Hall D Report on barrel calorimeter fiber tests Measure the energy and timing resolution of the prototype barrel calorimeter module. Verify the timing resolution for 600 MeV photons is less than 250 ps [WKB1]. [WKB1] 30-Apr-07 Report on tagger prototypingDetermine suitability of Silicon Photo-Multipliers for the readout of the Hall D Tagger Microscope. Verify that silicon PMTs perform at least as well as conventional PMT’s [WKB2]. [WKB2] 30-Jun-07 Report on Cerenkov readout and optics studies Determine the optimal photomultiplier tube for the Hall D Cerenkov counter. 31-Aug-07 Report on UPV prototypingDetermine the optimal wave-shifting fiber choice and grooving technique for the Hall D Upstream Photon Veto. 31-Jul-07 Report on FADC prototyping energy sums Complete fabrication and testing of prototype v1 of the energy-sum module. Verify that these boards can operate at 2.5 gigabits per second [WKB3]. [WKB3] 28-Feb-07 Report on full-scale prototypes of FDCs and CDCs Develop the fabrication technique for mounting full- scale cathode planes of the Forward Drift Chambers. Verify that a flatness of 200 microns can be achieved [WKB4]. [WKB4] 30-Sep-07

CD-2 Establishes the baseline budget for construction Reviews preliminary design (~35%) Requests construction funding Conducted by DOE-NP and OECM

Deadlines CD-2 is expected next summer. Pre-briefing material needs to be in place by ~April Decisions impacting the review must be made by ~Jan at the latest Decisions at this meeting Plans for the solenoid Cerenkov Detector

Manpower Manpower plan for 6 and 12-GeV is working its way through the system. Manpower has been identified as existing at the lab or requiring external hires Time is needed for new hires even after approval Key Personnel Hall D engineer (note: falling between the cracks) Electronics coordinator Cerenkov detector My proposal Try to re-direct existing manpower for fy07 Start hiring new personnel in coordination with new group leader as soon as practical

Independent Project Review Recommendation Recommendation #27 IPR Sec 2.5 (30-Jun-07) “Develop a plan for readout of GlueX barrel calorimeter based upon conventional photomultiplier tubes. The plan should include fiber routing, end iron configuration, shielding, and cost estimate.” Solenoid fringe fields have been computed. Ravi has developed drawings that show realistic distances and possible locations for conventional pmts in the fringe fields of the solenoid. Budgetary estimates for clear fibers and conventional pmts are under way. PR has been submitted for NKUA to investigate the use of field-resistant pmts with the barrel calorimeter.
