3 Volunteering in Scotland - the facts now

4 3 in 10 people provide regular unpaid help to organisations or groups in Scotland

5 This figure has remained static over the last 5 years

6 Overall by Gender….. 33% women volunteered in the last 12 months compared to 27% of men

7 Biggest difference between genders at ages 25-44 Are men aged 25-34 missed opportunity?

8 The type of organisations most commonly volunteered for are: schools (23%) other youth/children's organisations (19%) health, disability and social welfare organisations (19%)

9 Younger adults are more likely to volunteer with children + young people and help with sporting activities

10 Older adults are more likely to volunteer with the elderly and for religious organisations.

11 57% of volunteers in Scotland gave less than 6 hours in the previous 4 weeks.

12 A lower proportion of people volunteer from lower income households

13 The most common reasons that people gave for stopping volunteering were due to changes in their circumstances: no longer having time (27%) changing job (12%) moving house (11%) illness (10%)

14 Scotland’s changing – What will this mean for the future?

15 Population increased to 5.25million in 2011 4% up in 10 years

16 And its predicted to continue rising....

17 Under 16s 6% decrease Age 60-74 UP 15% Age 45-59 UP 13% Age 75+ UP 15% But…. the age structure is changing….

18 Pension age will continue to increase…

19 age 67 by 2026 - just 13 years away….. and likely to continue rising

20 46% of over 55s say they’d like to take part in unpaid work when they retire

21 But 35% say they will be doing regular child-minding for family

22 And more competing pressures for these volunteers …..

23 34% of people aged 65-74 have a limiting longstanding illness Increasing to 48% for aged 75+

24 Family dynamics are changing… responsibilities continue for longer

25 A third of all carers providing 50+ hours of care a week are aged 65+

26 80% of 18 to 24-year-olds still live at home

27 as do more than 30% of 25 to 34-year-olds

28 But there’s also a massive rise predicted in people living alone

34 Social media is changing how people interact
