5 The Electromagnetic Spectrum The range of wavelengths for electromagnetic waves is from less than nanometers (nm) for X-rays to more than kilometers for radio waves.

6 Types of Wave Electromagnetic waves are made up of changing electric and magnetic fields. EM waves are transverse waves because these fields are always perpendicular to the direction in which a wave moves

8 Speed of Light In a vacuum all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed of 3 × 108 m/s (or 186,000 miles per second).

9 The Electromagnetic Spectrum The electromagnetic spectrum includes all the waves shown in the chart. All these waves are the same oscillating electromagnetic disturbance. Note the tremendous variation in wavelength and frequency. The wavelength and frequency are related by: wavelength times frequency = speed
