The Electromagnetic Spectrum Chapter 6 Activity 4
Warm-Up Read What Do You Think on page 316. Record you ideas about this question in your comp book Now discuss your answers with the person sitting next to you
Activity Do the For You To Do activity on page 317. Answer #1-4 Answer the Physics To Go #1-7
The Electromagnetic Spectrum The range of wavelengths for electromagnetic waves is from less than nanometers (nm) for X-rays to more than kilometers for radio waves.
Types of Wave Electromagnetic waves are made up of changing electric and magnetic fields. EM waves are transverse waves because these fields are always perpendicular to the direction in which a wave moves
The Multi-Wave Milky Way Galaxy radio infrared visual X-ray gamma ray
Speed of Light In a vacuum all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed of 3 × 108 m/s (or 186,000 miles per second).
The Electromagnetic Spectrum The electromagnetic spectrum includes all the waves shown in the chart. All these waves are the same oscillating electromagnetic disturbance. Note the tremendous variation in wavelength and frequency. The wavelength and frequency are related by: wavelength times frequency = speed
Review – Electromagnetic Spectrum What does it mean? (25 words: explain) How do we know? (25 words: describe the experiment) Why do we believe? (25 words: example outside of class) Why should I care?
