S.W.B.A.T apply the bohr model to charged atoms (ions) Homework: BOHR MODEL with ions PROBLEM SET ANNOUNCEMENTS QUIZZES MUST BE FINISHED OR MADE UP BY TUESDAY AFTER SCHOOL!! IF I DON’T HAVE A SCIENCE FAIR IDEA BY WEDNESDAY, I WILL ASSIGN YOU A PROJECT ALL HOMEWORK MUST BE WRITTEN IN AGENDA BOOKS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOURS EVERY DAY! 10/11/2012

18 Let’s Talk About Valence Electrons
What are Valence Electrons? What’s the Octet Rule? Electrons in the outer most shell Determine elements chemical properties Atoms gain, lose, or share electrons in order to have 8 valence electrons How do valence electrons effect an elements reactivity?

21 Let’s Try It Together!!

22 Collaborate! Work With A Partner!

24 Exit Ticket Silently Complete your Exit Ticket/Reflection. You have 5 minutes When finished raise your hand for Ms. Durrette to collect it Keep your Cornell Notes out, we have a few more notes to take!

26 Charged Atoms What is an
ion? How is the Octet Rule related to ions? An atom or bonded group of atoms with positive (+) or (-) charge Atoms gain or lose electrons to try to have 8 valence electrons They want to be like Noble Gases

27 Let’s Talk About Valence Electrons
Elements on the left side of the Periodic Table (Groups IA, IIA, IIIA) will tend to lose valence electrons. End up with a Positive charge= Cations Elements on the right side of the Periodic Table (Groups VA, VIA, VIIA) will tend to gain valence electrons End up with a Negative charge= Anions How do atoms lose and gain electrons? What are Cations and Anions Cations and Anions attract each other
