27 What is an ion? How is the Octet Rule related to ions? An atom or bonded group of atoms with positive (+) or (-) charge Atoms gain or lose electrons to try to have 8 valence electrons They want to be like Noble Gases

28 How do atoms lose and gain electrons? What are Cations and Anions Elements on the left side of the Periodic Table (Groups IA, IIA, IIIA) will tend to lose valence electrons. End up with a Positive charge= Cations Elements on the right side of the Periodic Table (Groups VA, VIA, VIIA) will tend to gain valence electrons End up with a Negative charge= Anions Cations and Anions attract each other
