Sex v. Gender SEX Usually Associated with physical characteristics like genitalia, hormones, and chromosomes E.g., the doctor looks at a babys body and says its a boy! *BUT* this binary is problematic for many people
Sex v. Gender Gender The way that people are expected to act based on how their bodies look. E.g., the babys parents buy it certain clothes, books, and toys; sign the baby up for certain classes; teach the baby certain manners
A Few Definitions Transgender Transsexual Gender Queer Transman / Transwoman FTM / MTF Various other kinds of gender non- conformity ** Respect everyones Right to Define Themselves!
Diversity Within the Trans Community Sexual Orientation Bodies Transitions Ability to pass & desire to do so Plus every other kind of diversity (racial, cultural, ability, etc.)
Common Issues Facing Trans People Violence Trans people are disproportionately homeless, living in poverty, and incarcerated IDs and other official documents Checking boxes on forms Doctors Medicalization / Pathologizing of Identities Airport Security Bathrooms
