Andrea Wakley BSAP Fall 2007 Betsy Saur
WMU Recreation Center Facility Managers This intervention took place at Westerns Recreation Center to help improve the communication between the facility managers and the professional staff. This really happened!
Reason to Intervene The directors at the Recreation center were having trouble getting their facility managers to fill out their paperwork efficiently. By having them fill out their paperwork correctly, it allowed for better communication between the two.
Analyze the Natural Contingencies Before the intervention, the managers had a give level of efficiently filled out paperwork After completing their paperwork There was an infinitesimally greater level of efficiently filled out paperwork This was to small to control the outcome of their behaviors
Ineffective Natural Contingency A given level of quality performance Complete Paperwork An infinitesimally greater level of quality performance
Natural Competing Contingency A given amount of free time Complete paperwork Less amount of free time
Baseline Graph Description All of the paperwork one month prior to the intervention was collected Data was recorded on how many forms were completed efficiently
Specify the Performance Objectives The director met with the grad assistants to go over how to fill out the paper work correctly. The grad assistants trained the Facility Managers on how to fill out the papers efficiently. Cost around $70 for training time
Input-Process-Output Model (Output) Managers that complete paperwork efficiently 100% of the time Production: Implementing proper techniques (Input) Managers that do not complete paperwork efficiently 100% of the time
Goal Specification Form Output Managers that complete paperwork efficiently 100% of the time Standards Quality CurrentIdeal Paperwork filled out efficiently 50% of the time Paperwork filled out efficiently 100% of the time Quantity Less than 50% of managers 100% of managers Timeliness While working if at allBefore shift is over Cost n/a No more than $150 on intervention ProcessImplementing Proper techniques Production: XDistribution_ __R&D__ _ InputManagers that do not complete paperwork efficiently during shift
Design the Intervention The managers were having the most trouble filling out their paperwork efficiently A new form was implemented to see that if their job duties were broken down, if the response would increase. If need be a raffle would take place for 2 free movie tickets.
Performance Management Contingency Will lose Opportunity for Movie ticket Raffle Complete Paperwork Will not lose Opportunity For movie Ticket raffle
Design an Intervention The directors felt there was no need in the raffle at this point if their performance was improving with feedback Will lose Opportunity for Positive feedback Complete Paperwork Will not lose Opportunity For positive feedback
Implement the Intervention The form was shown to the managers a meeting The grad assistants explained what they were looking for when filling out the paper Within a week the managers were showing improvement
Evaluate the Intervention
IOA I asked my roommate to help me look through the forms to see if she thought they were completed efficiently For week 5 we agreed 100% Week 6 = 94% (there was one form that I felt was not completed efficiently and she felt it was) Week 7 = 100%
Evaluate the Intervention For the intervention 5 managers forms were randomly selected (same as 5 from baseline) The forms were totaled together There was a show in increase for efficiently completed paperwork Still not quite 100% but on the way!
Recycle (hypothetical) If we were to continue on we would have a raffle drawing for the opportunity to win movie tickets. After every shift the facility managers would have to turn their papers into the grad assistant, the GAs would look over the paperwork If the papers were filled out efficiently than they would write the facility managers name on a ticket and place it in a box. Every Friday at noon a drawing would take place to win the tickets.
Performance Management Contingency Will lose Opportunity For movie Ticket raffle Complete Paperwork Will not lose Opportunity For movie Ticket raffle
Evaluate the Recycle
When the opportunity to win movie tickets was implemented as a PM contingency the behavior of filling out the paperwork efficiently, increased. Their performance shows that the opportunity to win movie tickets is controlling their behavior.
Personal Experience I enjoyed every minute of this project I have a new understanding of BSA Everyone I worked with at the Recreation Center were very helpful I would do this again!
Manager and Employees Experience I got positive feedback from the directors, grad assistants and the facility managers They were pleased and are going to continue using this new form in the future!
Social Validity The goals, procedures and results of an intervention are socially acceptable to the client, the behavior analyst and society. This intervention was a success in terms of meeting the social validity criteria. By implementing a new form, and the trainings, had an outcome with better communication, helped the managers, the professional staff, and was accepted by myself and society.
Survey 81% said they were aware that the quality of filling out the paperwork needed improvement 65% felt that this was an issue 76% felt that the new form allowed them to better communicate with efficiency 75% thought that the new form was easy to understand 68% liked the verbal feedback 84% are now aware of the required standards of their performance 92% would like the new forms and verbal feedback to continue
